 Mr. Katsuji Kitada, who served as a chef on the Antarctic Expedition Wintering Expedition, visited “Seasonal Vegetables Restaurant Akaoni”, where he is the manager and chef. Mr. Katsuji Kitada participated in the 38th (March 1996-March 1999) and 45th (July 2003-March 20005) wintering teams in charge of cooking at the Showa Station of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.

The beef stew that was popular with the members of the Antarctic wintering expedition that was prepared us in the middle of summer. The restaurant menu is only available in winter, but we were able to enjoy the time-consuming beef stew.

 It is boiled for 4.5 hours while removing the lye, then simmered for 10 hours. We had the traditional beef stew for the first time in a long time. It was so delicious that I was so full that I couldn’t eat dinner.

Furthermore, we listened to the story of Antarctica for 90 minutes, and I was able to hear the difficulties that ordinary people who have never been to Antarctica cannot know.

 First of all, there are many mental and physical examinations to join the Antarctic Expedition Wintering Expedition, and the first barrier is to receive stamps from about 15 doctors. He can’t go to Antarctica unless he pass everything, both mentally and physically. Working in a harsh environment requires a strong physical and mental strength.

 During the wintering period in Antarctica, even if relatives die, they cannot return to Japan. A member’s mother passed away, and for about a month, the member played her mother’s favorite music on the organ to express her feelings.

 In addition, he taught us that he could not do anything on his own in a harsh environment, and he became aware of his position as a member of a team. The restaurant is located in the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Katsurasaka, Nishikyo-ku). General people can also use it.
