Every Thursday, Kyoto farmers in Kamigamo, Yasumi Noen, sell their produce to Rakuchu. At the corner of Rokkaku in Sakaimachi, a light car is loaded with vegetables and sold, so I was able to wait and buy it. In the Edo period, it was a furiuri, in which vegetables and flowers were sold in baskets attached to both sides of a balance stick. The times have changed, and hand-carts and large eight carts have appeared, and now it has been replaced by light cars.
Fururiuri in Kyoto is which producers sell directly to consumers. It seems that Edo (Tokyo) also had street selling, but the system from the market to the consumer was the form of Edo.
In Kyoto, there was a famous Furiuri selling. From the Kamakura period to the early Showa period, women from Ohara, Sakyo Ward, walked about 20 kilometers round trip, carrying about 40 kilograms worth of merchandise on their heads, and sold them all the way to Rakuchu.
From the Heian period to the Meiji period, Katsurame sold sweetfish and candy. Although it is now closed, there was an old-fashioned candy shop called Katsuraame in Katsura. I once heard a story that when Emperor Ojin was a child, Princess Katsura dissolved katsura candy in hot water and gave it to the emperor instead of milk.
Shirakawame was a woman who lived in Shirakawa, Sakyo Ward, selling flowers all the way to Rakuchu. It is said that she delivered flowers to the Imperial Palace. It is now sold as a light vehicle. It seems that the call “Hana, Irimahenka :Don’t you need flowers” was a specialty.
Both Oharame and Katsurame wear unique costumes that can now only be seen at festivals. It has become a thing of the past.
At the end of June, I visited Rokkaku Sakaimachi at 10 am. Perhaps the customers who are waiting for the selling are saying, “I still don’t know.” When the selling car arrived, out of nowhere, more than a dozen customers gathered and were shopping. It’s probably a familiar regular customer.
Every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Sakaimachi Rokkaku, at around 10:10 a.m. at Nishinotoin Shijo-daru, and at 11:00 a.m. at Gion Kagetsu Lower Street.
I bought tomatoes, Kamo eggplants, cucumbers, and Handsome Green lettuce. All the vegetables were delicious and I ate too much. I have visited Shizuhara fields many times. Strawberries are also delicious, and I wonder if there are different types of vegetables that are grown with a lot of love. In winter, he grows suguki and makes suguki-zuke pickles in his hut. Every winter, I visit Suguki-goya in Nishigamo, and the pickles are very mild. You can enjoy vegetables that have been blessed with the blessings of nature throughout the year.
