I waked up early and then we had visited farmhouse of eggplant for Kamo-eggplant in Shizuhara erea located in the northern Kyoto city
The road drived by bus that leads to the mountain is beautiful with air and water, followed by a rural landscape of mountains and fields. Masato Yasumi’s Yasumi Farm has grown 620 Kamo eggplants as a farmer. We visited the house and listened to various stories.
In G20 held in Osaka in June, the leaders of each country seemed to have enjoyed this Kamo eggplant. I also cooked this Kamo eggplant, it was very tasty, soft and juicy.
Eggplant came from India during the Tenpyeong period (729-749), and the soil was fertilized by human excrement excreted from wealthy merchants and court nobles having with nutritious food from the Kamakura period, and grew deliciously in the climate of Kyoto. It is a kyoto vegetable. In the Edo period, near the Kamogawa River on the north side of the current Heian Shrine, it is the result of efforts made by generations of farmers for hundreds of years. The mountains of Kyoto, the climate of Kyoto, people living there and Kyoto culture are packed.
Kamo eggplant is a delicate variety that requires traditional cultivation techniques that are difficult to plant and pollinate. It is Kamo eggplant which grew up by matching the climate of Kyoto and the field soil. This varieties can only be harvested for a third even of normal eggplant evenif you use three times the amount of water and three times the amount of fertilizer. Even if the sunlight hits too much, you can’t make a good Kamo eggplant,too.
Kamo Nasu is a large round eggplant with a beautiful luster on the surface and white underneath the calyxes. It has a spherical shape like a softball, with a diameter of 10-12cm and a weight of 400-500g. Large ones can weigh as much as 1kg. It is characterized by a glossy purple color, thick pulp and fleshy meat, not falling apart while boiling.
About five years ago, when I visited Paris, France, I visited several government agencies. At that time, it was said that we had a dinner party with Kyoto vegetables grown at the Palace of Versailles, but it seems that Kamo eggplant did not grow in size and did not develop a cocoon amber color. This tells us how difficult it is to grow delicate Kamo eggplants
This is Versailles vegetables rather than Kyoto vegetables.
At Yasumi Farm, we only ship Kamo-eggplants with a diameter of 12 to 13 cm or more. 180 Kamo-eggplants seedlings are cultivated in a house that is about 33 meters long, and 620 seedlings are grown in total. The flower blooms and grows big in two weeks, but the shape of the flower can be seen. The ones with bad flower shapes are discarded first. It’s a time-consuming Kyoto vegetable.
