On April 23rd , 2023, Matsuono Taisha Matsuono Festival, which was called Nishi no Aoi Matsuri and Matsuono no Aoi Matsuri, was held. This is a festival for the common people that used to be called the Matsuono National Festival. The eastern end of Shijo-dori is Yasaka Shrine, and the western end is Matsuono-taisha. There are various theories, but both shrines were founded in the early Heian period, during the Jogan era.
The reason why it was called the Aoi Festival of the West is because of the main shrine of Matsuono Taisha.Romon, shrine,The main shrine, mikoshi (portable shrine), and the crowns and eboshi hats of the attendant priests of each Otabisho are all decorated with Aoi and Katsura flowers, which is why it is also called the Aoi Matsuri. The Aoi Festival is a festival that has been held since the time of Emperor Kinmei in the Asuka period. It was started by the order of the emperor because the plague was prevalent and the five grains did not grow.
The Matsuono Festival is a festival held once a year to welcome the great deity of the mountains to the village, treat them with parishioners, raise their spiritual powers, and return to the mountains. Just like the cherry blossom front, the god of the mountain comes down to the village, offers alcohol and other offerings to the cherry blossoms, and receives the hand-me-downs, which is the origin of Japanese cherry blossom viewing. There are similarities.
The Katsura tree has the property that it grows only in places with clean water.
A tree growing straight up into the sky and two leaves of a hollyhock growing like they are crawling on the ground means that the heavens and the earth meet.
It means that the god of heaven and the god of earth meet.
The Aoi Festival of both Kamo Shrines is one of Kyoto’s three major festivals, and Matsuono Taisha and Fushimi Inari Taisha, both of which have strong ties to the Hata clan, have inherited the tradition of Kamo Shrine. At the Shinkosai and Kankosai, two groups of young children from the Kisshoin district play important roles in the “Sakaki gomen,” leading the way by holding large branches of Sakaki with the masks of the old man and the elder. Also, children selected from the Shimotsubayashi district serve as “MatsuonoEnvoy” at the Kankosai.
The reason why the Shinko-sai and Kanko-sai are called “Walking out, coming back” is because it is said that the day of the rabbit is the day of the appearance and the day of the rooster is the day of the rooster’s return. Since ancient times, it has been popular as a festival for the common people.

The Gion Festival is a festival of Yasaka Shrine, and the Matsuo Festival of Matsuo Taisha is also a festival of Matsuo Taisha. As a festival for the common people, there are various theories. They all have one thing in common: they were founded in the early Heian period, during the Jogan era. The style that chigo leads is the same.
We observed the Mikoshi Togyo festival from the top of the Katsura Ohashi Bridge, but in the Edo period, the water level of the Katsura Imperial Villa pond was the same as the water level of the Katsura River. I remembered the Miya family who enjoyed the harvest moon on the boat and I spent a time slipping back in time.
