After the foundation is completed, work to return roof tiles to the original place on top of it.

The thickness is slightly different, so adjust with soil

Wash the roof tiles with water

On May 7, 2023, I visited the restoration work site of the Yamazaki house. Today’s work was to reinforce the foundation, and on top of that, to return the roof tiles that had been placed on the upper side of Okudo-san before the restoration to their original positions.

Rinse the roof tiles with water to remove dust. Dust is a great enemy because it strengthens the adhesion of the soil. In the past, people used roof tiles and soil skillfully. When the roof tiles began to leak, we reused them for the foundation of Okudo-san. By using the roof tile carefully, it will be able to withstand the frequency of use. The strength of the soil that covers the whole is increased by adding straw and fermenting it. It seems that May is a good time for fermentation, when it is neither too hot nor too cold.

If you light a fire with Okudo-san, smoke will come out. The smoke turns into soot and hurts the Okudo-san, so it is coated with soil so that the smoke does not enter the interior of the Okudo-san. If the tile and soil are not in close contact with each other, soot will enter and reduce the useful life of the tile. It seems to be the reason why fermented straw is used in soil to block soot.

Also, it seems that clay that is resistant to fire hardens easily when kneaded with water, while clay that is weak to fire does not harden easily. I learned that soil has different properties. Each time, I learned new discoveries from Mr. Junji Miyaoku, who is full of wisdom, craftsmanship, and spirit.
