This booklet was published 35 years ago by Kyoto Prefecture as part of its Hometown Creation Project. I have enjoyed collecting materials since my student days, and have collected many materials related to Kyoto.

Among them, this is the booklet that I treasured. I remember being deeply moved by the collection of exquisite contents. Each message to Kyoto from famous people from all over the world with different cultures was thought-provoking and filled with words that made sense.

Among them, the words of Yoko Ono (wife of the late John Lennon) that I found particularly profound were: “Old materials connect to a new world. Kyoto has a huge reserve of energy, and new perspectives are born from that. Have dreams that use the energy of your roots. Then, use the energy of this ancient capital to make a leap forward.”

She has a keen eye for Kyoto, and can accurately describe the source of Kyoto’s future growth and its overall outlook. She is well aware of the springboard for future growth, based on the city’s past and present history. 35 years ago, I thought that if possible, I would like to hear directly from her what she wanted for Kyoto.

Donald Shannon, a senior reporter at the Los Angeles Times, described Kyoto as the jewel of Asia, with its meditative atmosphere. Many famous people have praised Kyoto. To ensure that Kyoto remains Kyoto forever, Kyo-suzume is currently accepting “love letters to Kyoto” and “love letters from Kyoto.” The deadline is the end of October 2025. We look forward to receiving your applications.
