After the heavy rain in August, we visited Yusai-tei, a dyeing artist in Arashiyama. Yusai-san has been a friend of mine for 20 years since he appeared as a lecturer in “Kyoto water story” at Kyo-Suzume School. He gave Korozen, which Emperor Saga can only ware to the emperor, as a dyeing artist who was restored 1200 years later.

When I first met him, more than 20 years ago, I remember talking for 6 hours. It is a dyeing that changes the color by the sun light. When it is shined by the sun, the color changes to golden brown. It is characterized by its color changing when exposed to fluorescent lamps, incandescent lamps, and the sun.

The other day, Yusai-san called me because he wanted to treat me sweetfish. It is said that the sweetfish season is now being picked up early in the morning and evening and in the Katsura River. On that day as well, he baked the freshly caught sweetfish in the morning. It is excellent.

The room in the photo is the Kawabata room where Professor Yasunari Kawabata wrote “The Sound of the Mountain”. Now, the blue maple is reflected on the glass of the table, and I received matcha and sweetfish in a very fantastic atmosphere. It was a day when I could hear the sound of the river, the chirping of birds was pleasant to my ears, and I enjoyed another world.

While I stay at Yusai-tei for a long time, I will hear the sounds of mountains and rivers in a different world. I also feel that it awakens the five human senses. For those who work in an urban office, it’s a great place to relax and reset.

The tree in the photo is the Oi-River. It was a day when the river and mountains, birds and traditional crafts were set and time slipped into the Heian period.
